River Blindness Merck has donated more than 1
billion tablets of MECTIZAN (a treatment for River Blindness), with
more than 350 million treatments administered since 1987. The
program currently reaches more than 45 million people in Africa,
Latin America and the Middle East (Yemen) each year.
Having been established for 20 years, the MECTIZAN Donation
Program is the single largest, longest standing public/private
partnership of its kind and is widely regarded as one of the most
successful public-private health collaborations in the world.
The fight against HIV Accelerating Access
Initiative - this partnership improves access to HIV/AIDS treatment
in developing countries and Merck's contribution means that those
countries hardest hit by AIDS will receive our HIV/AIDS medications
with no charge.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and The Merck Company
Foundation each have contributed US $50 million over several years
to the partnership.
CanTeen This is an extract from an interview
with the New South Wales Division of CanTeen, the Australian
organisation that works to support, develop and empower young people
aged 12-24, living with cancer.
CanTeen: 'In the New South Wales division, Merck Sharp &
Dohme is our largest and longest-running corporate supporter. They
encourage donations from their staff and then the company matches
that and the money comes straight to us. They're the biggest
corporate supporter we have.'
